QT won't let me post my detailed review of this agent but the tl;dr is that I queried this agent and they had my full and the day before they responded to me they subtweeted me with this:

https://x.com/jes_trudel/status/1775934113536483450?s=46

My issue here isn't with the fact that this agent thinks I need to edit my work. I write professionally for a living. Edits are a part of life. My issue here is with the fact that she thought it was okay to send out a tweet like that knowing full well that an author waiting for her response is going to see it. I’d initially brushed this off as “funny” but when I told some writer friends about it (all of them are also marginalized and are writers of color), they were immediately able to spot how this was not okay.

Tl;dr, claiming to champion diversity is one thing. Actually doing so and being self-aware of its nuances like, oh, I don’t know, maybe understanding the power dynamics between querying POC writers and agents is a whole other thing?

I received a detailed rejection letter back from Jes, and I am very grateful for her feedback. I have received so many standardized rejections it was refreshing to actually get some constructive feedback. Thank you, Jes!
